Bookend the Day. Wellness Challenge 2019: Day 2
Wellness Challenge 2019: Day 2
Tooth Brushing Meditation
Welcome to my Wellness Challenge 2019: Day 2!
Everyone should brush their teeth twice a day. It’s a habit built from childhood. I see it as a mild inconvenience but I don’t want to enrage my dentist so I persist. Usually, when I brush my teeth I do about twenty other things. I’ll brush my hair, make the bed, find clean clothes, pack my bag among other things. It doesn’t matter to me. As long as I’m making efficient use of those two minutes.
But not today. Or for the rest of the week, thanks to the NYT Wellness Challenge. Nope. They’re having me brush my teeth whilst standing on one foot and not because I’m trying to put my socks on at the same time. This ‘refresh‘ day is about being focused on the moment and it seems that 2 minutes of teeth brushing is the ideal moment to focus.
What I thought
It’s definitely an entertaining idea though my balance is a little off. I’m sure that’ll get better as the week goes on. But I don’t think it’s about the balance. It’s not really even about brushing your teeth.
This activity is about taking back the moments. Pausing your life and meditating on your senses. I think it’s fair to say that everyone is in a rush. They’re in a rush in their lives, days and moments. Always thinking forward or reflecting back. It’s stressful and unnecessary. It’s probably killing us slowly.
I really like the idea of bookending the day with moments of mindful nothingness. The balancing act is a fun way to force you to focus on something present. I’m definitely going to take back this moment for the rest of the week and see how it affects my day.
