Book Harvest: Spooky Halloween Stories 2017
Welcome to a spooky Halloween book haul from my very own bookshelves!
I like books. It’s no secret, it’s just the way it is. And if you’ve been reading this blog for a while or you just know me in real life you might know that I’m not that great at finishing books, or anything really but that’s a topic for another day. I buy books all the time and then I put them on my shelves. And then I look at them. And that’s it! I do the exact same thing with audio books. I’m my own personal nightmare.
So I’m trying out this thing called a Book Harvest that I just made up. Instead of going out and buying a bunch of new books like my Book Hauls, a Book Harvest is me taking books that I already have on my shelves and giving them a spotlight.
This month, of course, is spooky stories! Because of Halloween… duh.
I’ve picked out or harvested eight books from my book collection. Here they are!
Short Story Collections
Complete Ghost Stories by Charles Dickens – Twenty from the literary titan.
The Mammoth Book of Cthulhu edited by Paula Guran – Twenty-five short stories from writers inspired by H.P. Lovecraft. The stories are fairly short and really interesting! I really love this collection. Plus the cover is really pretty.
Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm With Illustrations by David Hockney – This collection includes: The Little Sea Hare, Fundevogel, Rapunzel, The Boy Who Left Home to Learn Fear, Old Rinkrank and Rumpelstilzchen. For those who don’t like being super creeped out, the classic fairy tales are only a little creepy. This copy has some seriously cool illustrations.
Ghostly by Audrey Niffenegger – (edited by!) This is a collection of sixteen ghostly stories from the very best creepy writers. I’m talking Edgar Allan Poe, Ray Bradbury, Neil Gaiman again.
Graphic Novels
The Sleeper and the Spindle by Neil Gaiman and Chris Riddell – Graphic novel, I think? It’s one story with amazing illustrations. Just read it. It’s great! Chris Riddell is a genius. Neil Gaiman is a genius. They did a fairy tale. It’s chilling. Read it.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa – Every 90’s kid knows about Sabrina Spellman but this one is psychotic! Thanks, Archie Horror, for ruining my childhood. I only read book one… there are more.
Non-Fiction
Black Cats & Evil Eyes by Chloe Rhodes – A non-fiction book about superstitions, where they came from and why we have them. What’s wrong with black cats? Why do so many people hate the number thirteen? This book’s really fun to dip into.
Horror: A Literary History edited by Xavier Aldana Reyes – Non-fiction. Horror through the ages. Books and Films. It’s not spooky but it’s filled with spooky things you might find a new favourite after reading it.
This list lacked novels. I know! At the moment, short stories are stealing the show and I’m not mad about it! They’re quick, fun and spoooooky!
Thanks for reading!
If you have any suggestions for anymore Halloween reads feel free to send them my way!
Like Book Hauls: Here’s more!
P.S. Affiliate links are going to Waterstones, don’t be scared! They’re my favourite!
