Book Review: Rat Queens

Jan 6, 2017

Rat Queens written by Kurtis J. Wiebe. Published by Image Comics.

A brief synopsis. Four kick-ass ladies kiss ass with demonic magic, swords and sweeties as the world seems to break apart around them. It seems to be based on Dungeons and Dragons lore and they bizarre and magical world backs this up.

I was addicted to the story and the characters as soon as a pick it up. Embarrassingly it’s taken me about a year to pick them up but mostly because of my own laziness. The moment I was in, I was in.

The four main ladies from left to right are; Dee, Betty, Hannah and Violet. Each one has their own strengths and weaknesses as characters (and as d&d characters). The story leaned more towards Hannah in terms of where the action took them but I got to know each of the characters independently through little subplots and backstories.

These graphic novels are great for anyone who likes fantasy tales with a dark and rude twist. The content is pretty graphic in parts… I’m talking full frontal sex scenes and axes through heads. Which I love but your little cousin might not enjoy so much.

I’m always drawn to stories where friendship and strength are key elements. They’re what I like to write and what I like to read. So for me, Rat Queens was perfect. After I’d devoured volumes 1-3, I went in search of more. Nothing new has been released since April 2016. But that new release was a really nice gem of a comic!

Critical Role is a great web-series where a bunch of voice actors play Dungeons and Dragons. It’s my favourite show. It’s great. The gem of a comic I found was a Rat Queens story with Critical Role cameos. It did follow on from the main story but it was an unfinished arc. Which is fine! As long as we get the ending…

Anyway… Yesterday (and this morning) were a great Rat Queens full experience. Beautifully written and illustrated, the insane characters will carry you through the stories.

Yeah. Give it a go! Here: Rat Queens: Volume One
