Book Review: Lumberjanes (Vol 1)

Oct 23, 2015
Today, a loveable review of the awesome Graphic Novel, Lumberjanes: Beware the Kitten Holy.
Five overly curious and incredibly disobedient campers at Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniguigul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types go on some epic adventures in a strange, supernatural forest. They take on three-eyed wolves, an epic sea monster and a bunch of ‘ancient booby traps’ in the first book of this awesome series.
Jo, April, Mal, Molly and Ripley, our five awesome Lumberjanes, complement each other incredibly well and honour their camp’s motto, ‘Friendship to the Max’ with stubborn intent. There’s plenty of emotional hugging and other sweet moments beautifully intertwined with epic moments of hardcore lady activities.
The novel is four bite-sized chapters, I managed each chapter in 10 minutes…
Each has an intro on a camp badge that serves as the theme of the chapter. For example, the first badge is the ‘Up All Night Badge’, which sees the girls wondering through the forest and fighting some slightly cult-y wolves in the middle of the night. This is not quite what the Lumberjanes Field Manual has in mind, but these Lumberjanes never do anything by the book.
Although these chapters can be read independently, there’s a promise of a mystery hidden in the forest and involving the supernatural beings we encounter and I’m hoping the story will be expanded to reveal some brilliant twists. This is obviously just the begin and I can’t wait to read more.
It’s the ultimate feel good, utterly charming, butt-kicking, girl-empowering, cosy read for a rainy afternoon.
Check out the awesome adventure by Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis and Brooke Allen (with BOOM! Studios) you won’t be sorry.
